Iran Cancels Plans to Elect a Parliament

TEHRAN, Jan. 31 — The Iranian interior minister said Saturday that the reformist government of President Mohammad Khatami would call off parliamentary elections set for Feb. 20 because the hard-line Guardian Council insisted on barring thousands of candidates.
"The fate of over half of the seats is already decided," said Abdolvahed Moussavi Lari, the interior minister, the Fars News Agency reported.
