Tehran, Jan 12, IRNA -- Italian Head of Iran-Italy parliamentary
friendship group Luciano Violante said here Monday that free
performance of parliaments indicate freedom of nations.
Attending a press conference along with his Iranian counterpart
Ahmad Bourghani, Violante expressed regret over mass disqualification
of candidates for the next parliamentary election in Iran.
He added the European countries assessed Iran as an important
and strategic country in the region.
Violante highlighted the importance of Iran`s upcoming
parliamentary election and expressed hope that Iran can play a leading
role in the region.
Pointing to Iran`s right to use nuclear energy, he voiced
pleasure with positive talks held between Iran and three EU
ministers during Italy`s chairmanship of the European Union.
"We believe peaceful cooperation between Iran and the EU in the
field of nuclear energy can be very effective," he noted.
He urged all countries to respect the Iranian nation`s election
and said internal affairs of Iran should be regarded with respect
and free from any interference.
He expressed condolences over the devastating earthquake which
hit the southeastern city of Bam and said Italy dispatched equipment
needed by four medical centers to the quake-stricken city.
The Italian official expressed his country`s readiness to
reconstruct the Arg-e Bam citadel, almost completely destroyed by
the quake.
Bourghani, for his part, appreciated Italy for its humanitarian
aid to the people of Bam and said the assistance showed Iran and
Italy are two friendly countries.
He hoped the two sides would increase exchange of parliamentary
delegations with an aim of strengthening Tehran-Rome ties.
